Help Your Family Rest

Monday, November 24th, 2008

Life today brings all kinds of stress for every family. Each member of the family needs proper rest to handle life’s demands. But in every family there is probably at least one member who has trouble sleeping.

In this article, we will review some helpful tips on helping a person fall asleep. How long does it take for a given individual to fall asleep? That can depend on a number of factors, including how tired the person is, what the person ate before they went to bed, and numerous other factors. If you have sleep problems, it may take what seems like hours to fall asleep.

Insomnia means you find it extremely hard to go to sleep. It also can mean that staying asleep is a constant challenge. Most people who suffer insomnia say that they remember tossing and turning all night long, or remember being awake at night. Nights when I struggle with insomnia I just can’t seem to turn my mind off, and often I can’t even close my eyes. Usually it takes me about 30 minutes to fall asleep; but my son is asleep as soon as his head hits the pillow.

The TV helps me fall asleep — I have it on a timer and it shuts off after 30 minutes.I also require total darkness, and my bedroom needs to be ice cold – even in summer. This doesn’t help save energy, of course!

There are natural or behavioral treatments for insomnia. One relaxation technique is practiced by tensing different muscle groups and then relaxing them. Another method involves repeating a set of visualizations to produce a state of relaxation. My favorite visualization: lying in the sun on a beach in the Bahamas.

Another helpful method is to associate the bedroom with sleep and sleep alone, by limiting the time spent in the bedroom for non-sleep activities. So take your computer, office, and TV out of the bedroom. Also avoid large meals just before bed, and reduce the use of stimulants, such as caffeine; this can help reduce insomnia. One can also try soaking in a hot bath to relax, or listening to some soft music before retiring for the night. More info at bestinsomnia.com.

Melatonin is an aid to help people fall asleep. It is especially helpful for people who suffer from insomnia caused by jet lag or shift work. Melatonin occurs naturally in the body; this happens when serotonin is exposed to a reduced quantity of light.
Other common over-the-counter (OTC) sleep aids such as Sominex or Nytol can also be tried by adults; but one should consult their doctor before taking any of these sleep aids especially if you suffer from Parkinson’s disease, or are being treated for depression or other mental health problems. But it is also buying into the mindset of turning to a pill to solve a problem, which can spawn problems in other areas of a person’s life.

It is advised that if you have trouble falling asleep and have tried all the natural tips in this article, then perhaps you should see a sleep management specialist. So many people have sleep problems; there is now a subspecialty in medicine for sleep problems. Inomnia might be a symptom of another medical problem, so it is best to get a consultation with your doctor and discuss your sleeping problems with him.

Even with all these tips on falling asleep, each person must discover their own best way to fall asleep and stay asleep. Naturally, the ideas shared here must be evaluated and adapted relative to age, health, and other factors; but do whatever is needful to help your family rest well.

Dining Room Furniture – Contemporary Or Modern?

Wednesday, November 19th, 2008

If you are considering home makeover there is a good chance that you are intending to change the look of your dining room. Solid wood has long been a classic choice for dining room furniture, and there are good reasons for this choice, but what wood should you choose?

For me there is only one choice and that has to be solid oak furniture, you simply can’t get away from the ambience that oak dining room furniture can bring to a room.

Solid Oak Furniture is available in a range of styles ranging from antique to contemporary and modern. And if you can’t find exactly what you are looking for you could always commission a furniture maker to design you something which is a task they will relish.

When people think of oak, they think of something wonderfully classic and sturdy, something that can be passed on to later generations. When you are thinking about what you need from a dining table set, there are many reasons to consider, so make a list of the most important things to you.

When your oak furniture comes to you, you will find that it has already been sealed and is quite lovely. Over time, though, that shine can dull, but it can easily be restored through a rubbing of a drying oil, like teak oil or linseed oil once every six months.

You’ll need to consider your own individual and personal sense of style. Are you looking for an item of furniture has an elaborate design and intricately carved legs, or are you more interested in something that is traditional without being overwhelming, either way oak will give you plenty of choice.

The grain of oak is warm and quite lovely, and whether it has been stained or not, you will see that that the real beauty of this wood come through.

Once you have owned pieces of solid oak furniture, you really start to appreciate how heavy it is, and how long it will last especially compared to many mass produced modern furniture that is nothing more than veneer on compressed board in a lot of instances.

If you would like to know more about oak furniture you can find plenty of information on our website as well as an excellent range of oak dining room furniture.

Disarming your Toddler’s Biting Problem

Wednesday, November 19th, 2008

Between their first and third birthdays, most toddlers engage in some form of biting. Typically, this behavior develops because it is one of the few means of communication available to a toddler. But not all children have the biting habit. Some of them shove, hit, pinch or grab. This might be just as bad!

Also, toddlers sometimes start biting because their motor skills and ability to communicate are so restricted, that they have to express themselves somehow.

It can seem funny for a young toddler to see his mommy suddenly bolt upright or for one of her playmates to begin crying. Another possible cause of biting behavior is related to teething; if they can put a teething ring in their mouth, why not someone’s ear? The problem could even be as simple as being hungry.

How do you teach your child not to bite? It has to be completely understood that biting is bad behaviour and can hurt others. Point out how much pain it causes other children when your toddler bites them. Make sure you tell your toddler that biting is unacceptable and wrong and that mommy and daddy do not appreciate it.

If you find that your child is biting due to frustration, give your toddler an alternative way to express to people they are having a difficult time. Although it seems a gargantuan effort for your toddler to communicate with words, this is a great time to start teaching them the right words for a situation.

As an example, “When you need to tell mommy that you need some help, you can’t bite.” Or “Show mommy what you need, but don’t bite. You’ll hurt her if you bite, and I know you would never want to hurt mommy.” This might induce a sense of shame for their actions, and they may think twice the next time before biting someone.

Parents should not let biting become the center of attention. This is true of all behavior that you do not want to see repeated. Let your toddler know, firmly yet gently, that biting is not permitted, that it’s wrong and that it hurts everyone, grownup or child.

4 Benefits of Exercise for your Child

Friday, November 14th, 2008

Is your child getting enough exercise? If she isn’t exercising at all, you need to take steps to change that right away. Exercise is essential to your child’s health. Here are 4 more reasons why your child benefits from a regular exercise routine:

1. Exercise reduces the risk of obesity. If your child takes part in a regular exercise program, her chances of becoming obese are dramatically reduced. An active child equals a healthier child.

2. Exercise lessens the risk of diseases. Diabetes and high blood pressure are combated by exercise. If you have a family history of such diseases, you should encourage your child to exercise.

3. Exercise strengthens your child’s body. As your child exercises on a regular basis, his muscles and bones will become stronger.

4. Exercise creates feelings of well-being. This is especially important to a child who is struggling with peer pressure or body image. Promote an exercise routine. Exercising helps release frustrations and can help boost your child’s self-confidence.

Need some exercise ideas to encourage your child? Why not incorporate an exercise routine into your schedule with your children? Try these simple ideas:

WALKING – Walking is the easiest, and one of the best forms of exercise for anyone. Walking is a great way to encourage a conversation as well.

SPORTS – Is your child interested in any type of sports? Why not grab the basketball and head to the court with him? Make a date every Saturday to spend a couple of hours playing basketball with your son.

SWIMMING – Just about every kid loves to swim. If you don’t have one of your own, invest in a monthly membership to a local gym.

BIKE RIDING – Close behind walking, riding bicycles is another great way to get fun exercise.

HIKING – If your family loves the outdoors, get everyone a pair of hiking shoes and a backpack and get moving. Plan special outings monthly, in addition to your regular exercise. Kids love hiking because they get to explore and discover nature close up.

GEOCACHING - This is {related to|based on} hiking, but has a “mission” or purpose. There are other resources that can explain what geocaching is, and your kids will probably love this activity.

Rodent Pest Control – Have You Checked Your Home?

Sunday, November 9th, 2008

There are lots of people who shiver at the thought of ever having a problem related to a mouse or rat, and yet if only they knew how prolific these pests really are.

The most common rodents that are found today tend to be the common house mouse and the brown rat. The rat that is known to spread the most disease (the black or ships rat) is now not widespread as in previous generations.

This has also been helped by anti rodent techniques and better pest control products so infestations are not as common as they have been in the past.

Many people use pest control products off the shelf but some like to try their own DIY pest control, this is often done by placing traps to catch the rat or mouse, or even poisons.

Rats have been identified as carriers for a number of diseases and are most commonly known as being the source of the bubonic plague which caused so much disease and death over the centuries. Today this is not an issue and some people even keep pet rats.

Thankfully the disease is now eradicated but there are some parts of the world where it is still present. It is believed to have come from fleas on the black rat that carried it thankfully today there is a reduced risk of the plague around the world, but none the less these visitors are definitely not welcomed in most houses or food establishments.

The biggest risk of disease in reality is to people that work or spend a lot of time in water i.e. sewer workers, water sport enthusiasts and even trainee army and sea cadets, who go on training weekends running through still water or ponds. They will be more prone to the risk of Weil’s disease which is carried in around 70% of rats.

There are other considerations apart from diseases of course and that is the damage that rodents can inflict on the fabric of your home. Rodents have an insatiable need to constantly gnaw to wear down their teeth which are constantly growing. Electrical cables and pipes are a particular favourite and can be damaged sufficiently to cause a fire risk.

Mice can also produce huge numbers of offspring and produce even more if the conditions are ideal, one pair could produce 2,000 young per year so take action early as these pests are a lot harder to eradicate once established so sorting the problem as soon as possible is highly advised.

Why Is There a Permanent Appeal for The Artificial Christmas Tree?

Sunday, November 2nd, 2008

When thinking of the holidays the first thing that comes to mind is the beautifully decorated Christmas tree.  The real pine Christmas tree is the first thought but the artificial Christmas tree is becoming more popular every year.  Even though life styles have changed over the years and new trends are developing constantly, the artificial Christmas tree has changed from very simple and basic designs into more beautiful and sophisticated designs.  Until recently it was all but impossible to find artificial Christmas trees in their original style.  Sticks with feathers (usually goose or duck) were what the original artificial Christmas trees were made from.  The feathers on the artificial Christmas trees were dyed green to make the artificial Christmas tree look more natural.  The feathers dyed green made the artificial Christmas tree have the look of natural pine needles.  The feather trees have recently started growing in popularity again.  The artificial Christmas tree with the feathers can be found in many more colors and more luxurious.  Many people today are looking for dyed artificial Christmas trees with fashionable colors instead of the natural green look.

The first manufacturers of artificial Christmas trees were brush companies.  Realizing their knowledge and production capabilities, they new the artificial Christmas tree could be mass produced.  The artificial Christmas trees pine needles were made from brush bristles.  Today the pine branches are made from plastic and come in quite a few different colors and sizes.New kinds of artificial Christmas trees are introduced every Christmas season. With modern artificial Christmas trees every season, an individual should be able to find a style of artificial Christmas tree to conform to their taste.  We even can find artificial Christmas trees that sing and dance, Metallic Trees.

The artificial Christmas tree’s structure was changed during the 1950’s.  It Changed from the original wood to modern metal ones and  ceased to be green. The Christmas tree in the 1950’s had faults and lacked the standards of modern safety and health regulations. During this time the artificial Christmas tree were often painted or made with flammable materials.  The first artificial Christmas trees were very hazardous and unacceptable, the heat from the strings of light could cause the artificial Christmas tree to catch on fire.  This hazard has been corrected with the advance of chemical developments.  The artificial Christmas tree that was once metallic has been replaced with tinsel trees.  Fire retardant materials are used for the artificial Christmas tree.  The tinsel tree makes a very safe addition to your holiday decorations.

The manufactures of artificial Christmas trees realized that as years passed consumers found less and less time to decorate and enjoy the holidays. The problem was solved by inventing an artificial Christmas tree that already features the lights attached.  This solves a couple different problems.  The time consuming job of stringing lights on the artificial Christmas tree and also helps eliminate the issues of dealing with blown bulbs.  And we all know that hours can be wasted trying to find that one bulb that keeps the whole string from working.  One of the newest trends in artificial Christmas trees is the fiber optic tree.  This artificial Christmas tree lights up but also changes colors at different time intervals.  The fiber optic artificial Christmas tree is becoming a very popular style because of their simplicity.

The artificial Christmas tree also has another new trend developing.  It is the upside down artificial Christmas tree.  These artificial Christmas trees are marketed for the safety of families.  The artificial Christmas tree can not be reached as easily because they are hung from the ceiling.  This artificial Christmas tree is popular because it takes up less floor space. And we all recognize this allows the jolly old elf to leave extra presents.  Even with the interesting features of this artificial Christmas tree, it still hasn’t caught on in today’s society like other types  there are many advantages of using an artificial Christmas tree as compared to using a real tree.  The artificial Christmas trees that are mass produced  means they can be used year after year.

A one time investment allows many years of enjoyment.  The artificial Christmas tree is available in many different colors and many sizes and shapes.  Now the perfect artificial Christmas tree is just a trip to the attic instead of the tree lot.  The biggest plus with the artificial Christmas tree is that the  mess from the falling needles is totally erased.  No more vacuuming dead needles for weeks after the holidays.  Another  major advantage of the artificial Christmas tree is never having to remember to water it.   With this said it is easy to see why the artificial Christmas tree still is growing in popularity  year after year.
